I’ve been thinking recently about adversity and how it can strengthen us. Sometimes we are blind-sided by huge changes outside our control, frightening events, health issues, or just the plain old overwhelming confusion and fear that come as a part of the seasons of our lives. Emotions can flood the body with physical anxiety that makes it difficult to ground yourself and make decisions.
The hard way can be the best way
If you are in the minority that has never wondered how you‘ll get past the next dip (OK, 1000 foot ravine), then you’ll have trouble understanding what the rest of us have learned: adversity builds character. That may sound hackneyed, but there is a truth that cannot be denied. If you crumble into a thousand pieces and cannot connect your pieces again, even if it means creating a new picture of you, think of the potential beauty that you’ll miss. If you lose yourself and don’t search for and find a flashlight to help you look for another path, you might stay so stuck in what seems like an unending pool of quicksand. If that happens you will miss the sense of accomplishment and strength that comes with fighting for you, not matter what.
Turn adversity into an opportunity
If things are too easy for us we become complacent and neglect to test our resources and inner strengths. We live in a world where many want and even demand easy, and I find that so very sad. I know from observing myself and others that we who have said, “OK, bring it on!” are the ones who can stand to face another round of adversity and also get to experience joy. Things never stay the same, and you will be tested over and over again in life. The testament to your core strength is how you handle it.
